The Skinny on Skin… Look Vibrant Naturally!
It's amazing to me that women and men will plunk down thousands of dollars to look younger while completely neglecting the part of their body that has the ability and potential to give them the vibrant youthful skin they crave. In fact it is projected that by 2015 boomers will spend up to 115 billion dollars on products to help shrink, smooth, firm, lift, plump and do anything that will slow or stop the signs of aging. Mind-boggling! But vanity comes at a price. Many of the products and procedures used to stop or slow the clock can cause underlying harm in their effort to make us look good. Add to that the over abuse of available anti-aging procedures by some overzealous consumers and some professionals and you have a rapidly growing population of strange looking individuals that lack any resemblance to who they once were. Here is the good news, you don't have to harm yourself to look beautiful, looking good can be achieved naturally. So why doesn't everyone do it that way? Because it takes time and work and we are a nation of people that thrive on instant gratification. So my question to you is this… Are you willing to live with the consequences of your choices when it comes to the skin you live in?
Let's start by talking about your skin. It is your largest organ, and more than just a cover. The skin is made up of several layers known as the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous tissue where the nerves and blood vessels live. It performs certain key functions in our body that include detoxification and vitamin D production, is a gateway to your circulation and a reflection of your internal health. The outer layer or epidermis's main function is protection and harbors a whole population of microorganisms that depend on and contribute to the skins' health. When you apply products on your skin, their tendency to end up in your system is the reason you must use caution in your skin care product choices. In a society where beauty is revered and aging is reviled, finding natural and healthy anti-aging methods can be a challenge.
Since the skin is an organ, it like all your organs, needs to be nourished not poisoned. The quickest and simplest way to do that is through diet. Eating a Mediterranean diet rich in fresh produce and lean proteins will supply the essential amino acids, phytonutrients, vitamins and minerals that fuel the skin's collagen production. Foods you should avoid include unhealthy fats such as hydrogenated, partially hydrogenated and polyunsaturated fats also known as vegetable shortening, margarines and vegetable oils. These damaging foods displace essential fats that nourish and maintain your skin's moisture and tone as well as leading to inflammation that can age your skin.
Water is also important, our bodies are made up of about 70% water and 30% solid matter and yet many of us go about our daily lives in a mild to moderate state of dehydration. I can't tell you how many times I'll hear a patient exclaim “But I'll keep going to the bathroom" when I instruct them to drink water. My answer is usually, “so what?" Just like the liver, the kidneys are part of our elimination organs and without their support we cannot have healthy skin. How much water should you drink? Approximately ½ your body weight (lbs.) in ounces or 1/3 your body weight (kg) in liters. Meaning if you weigh 150lbs you should be drinking at least 75oz of water per day and if you weigh 70kg you should be drinking a minimum of 2.5 liters per day. Is that all? You ask. Absolutely not, but starting with the simple changes outlined here will go a long way towards improving the appearance of your skin. Want more info?
